Kerry holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland (BA, LLB – UQ), one of Australia’s leading law schools.
In 1998, Kerry was formally assessed and accredited by the Queensland Law Society as an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law – a designation reserved for lawyers who demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills, and experience in their field through a rigorous assessment process and ongoing professional development requirements.
Kerry has maintained this specialist accreditation continuously for 25 years, placing him among a small group of Queensland lawyers who have held specialist status for that duration.
You can’t call yourself an Accredited Specialist. It requires:
When you work with The Workers Compensation Lawyers QLD, your matter is guided by a lawyer whose expertise has been independently verified by Queensland’s peak legal body.
In 2025, Kerry received the QLS 25-Year Accredited Specialist Award at the Queensland Law Society Specialist Accreditation Breakfast in Brisbane. The award was presented by the Honourable Chief Justice Bowskill of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
The award recognises lawyers who have maintained specialist accreditation for 25 consecutive years – an achievement that reflects not only legal expertise but an extraordinary commitment to professional standards and the clients they serve.
When accepting the award, Kerry noted:
“After practising for more than 40 years and having been an Accredited Specialist Personal Injury Lawyer in Queensland for 25 of those 40, I can confidently state that this practice area of compensation law has grown in complexity. Holding a specialist accreditation for so long has allowed me to achieve the best possible outcomes for my clients while also sharing my knowledge, experience, and expertise with my colleagues.”
Beyond his legal practice, Kerry has contributed directly to shaping Queensland and national compensation law through senior committee roles:
Kerry has served on the QLS Accredited Specialist Board, the body responsible for overseeing the specialist accreditation program that sets the standard for personal injury law expertise in Queensland.
Kerry has served on the Queensland branch of the Australian Lawyers Alliance, a national association of lawyers and academics committed to justice, freedom, and the rights of individuals.
Kerry worked directly with the Queensland Government and insurers on the reform of insurance law in Queensland – giving him a rare, first-hand understanding of how the legislative framework governing workers’ compensation claims was built and how it operates today.
Kerry has served on the Consumer Law Committee of the Law Council of Australia, the peak national body representing the Australian legal profession.
Kerry has contributed to the QLS committee responsible for court practice and procedure, informing how compensation matters are handled in Queensland courts.
Kerry Splatt played a central role in introducing capped legal fee legislation in Queensland under Section 347 of the Legal Profession Act.
This law caps what personal injury lawyers in Queensland can charge injured clients, protecting them from high legal costs at the most vulnerable time in their lives. The maximum a law firm can bill is 50% of the net settlement payout – and in practice, well-run firms charge significantly less.
Kerry’s direct involvement in introducing this reform reflects both his standing in the Queensland legal community and his commitment to fair treatment for injured workers.
Kerry provides guidance across all areas of Queensland workers’ compensation law, including:
Workers’ compensation law in Queensland has grown significantly in complexity over the past four decades. The interaction between the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003, the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002, the Civil Liability Act 2003, and insurer practices means injured workers face a system that is genuinely difficult to navigate without specialist legal advice.
Kerry’s 40 years of practice spans the evolution of Queensland’s entire compensation framework – from the early legislative foundations through to the current scheme. That depth of experience means he understands not just the current law, but the intent behind it, how courts have interpreted it, and how insurers have tested its limits.
His approach is direct: explain the law clearly, set realistic expectations, and pursue the best possible outcome for the client without unnecessary delay or cost.
